"Da respiração
O tempo
Sabe a não saber
Inspira o som
O silêncio
Ouve a água cadente
corrente
Soa o vento
Da erosão de mim."

Reviews:

"Bruno Parrinha on alto sax, in complete solitude, is the author of this courageous recording, in which lyrical and dreamy atmospheres mix with more aggressive, abrasive ones, just as Anthony Braxton or Roscoe Mitchell have already made us listen to on his instrument.
Parrinha's experimentation is one that offers itself in a soft way, sometimes with melodies with a calm aspect, sometimes with songs that have the appearance of a breath of wind, all seasoned with an inventiveness that knows how to find its own away in improvisation
Beautiful, varied, constantly looking for notes and silences to put together with the previous ones, the disc has something engaging, at the same time it is logical and precise in the way it is presented, due to the strong personality of the author, who has the absolute control over what happens in the sound space
A courageous solo album, between acoustic explorations and captivating melodies."

"A solo album by a saxophonist on a small Portuguese label. It may have little impact on turning a world in overdrive, but in this case it is a strong, personal story from an artist who searches and looks back without clichés.

Reed player Bruno Parrinha is just as active, but above all a well-known face in the experimental scene in Portugal. There he already played with cult figure Sei Miguel in the late eighties, but the following two decades he disappeared from view. About a dozen years ago he boosted his activity again and since then he has appeared on more than fifty (!) releases from the Creative Sources label, which mainly releases free improvised and electro-acoustic music. In between he also appeared on a few releases alongside guitarist Luís Lopes (among others as a member of his ensembles Lisbon Freedom Unit and Abyss Mirrors) and again alongside his former employer Sei Miguel.

Now Parrinha takes a step forward. His trio Vine Leaf, with Lopes and drummer João Valinho, just released a debut album on Clean Feed, while 4DaRecord released his first solo album Da Erosão . The titles of the album and the pieces are full of references to time, nature, weather and erosion, so it should not be surprising that you hear the reed player, who is limited to alto sax here, mainly in a contemplative and introspective mode. It also feels like listening to an artist who feels alone with his instrument. Personal and fragile, but also free and relaxed.

The tradition of solo sax records is as long as it is intimidating, from pioneers like Evan Parker, Peter Brötzmann, Anthony Braxton and Joe McPhee, to good folk of the young(er) guard like Darius Jones, Signe Emmeluth and Colin Webster. Recently also appeared a solo throw by Parrinha's frequent colleague Rodrigo Amado. Maybe it was an inspiration. In any case: throughout seven pieces the musician tells a coherent story that stays far away from pompous fuss and smooth effects, and forces several intense(ive) listenings. It ties together especially beautifully, with the first three pieces feeling like a suite of sorts as he moves from swelling and sustained sounds to lyrical, reflective terrain through real-time exploration .

, including pauses, silences, repetitions. The one time cool and sloping, with soft cornering, floating on a meandering, organic flow. A little further on, a bit more erratic, with larger intervals and an increase in volume and density. That can often sound very melodic, but sometimes the focus shifts to texture, it starts to grind, whine, sputter with emotion. Further on, the contrasts are intensified: the compact “Ideia Soluta”, good for barely 100 seconds, is largely played through circular breathing, like an expressive, almost eccentric siren, while “Condiçao Eólica” plays with breathing and extended techniques .

is in turn followed by the jubilant “Reflexos Abrasivos”, in which Parrinha lets the alto sax sing. Closing track “Assoreado” returns to the soft swelling of opener “Do Solo”, although that alto sax sounds like a distressed animal towards the end of this chapter. Parrinha has now proven enough to make a statement as a leader and as a solo artist and Da Erosão is – like Rodrigo Amado's Refraction Solo – a personal record that can perhaps teach you more about the performer than any other long player you can listen to. to belong. That's why it's worth listening to."

"Bruno Parrinha , who moves on a much more extreme, radical, heady grammar in his circumnavigation of the alto sax planet." Alberto Bazurro, lisolachenoncera.it

---------------------------------------

"Portuguese altoist Bruno Parrinha is - at least to me - best known for his collaborations with his fellow countrymen Ernesto Rodrigues (seven albums together this year!), Sei Miguel and Luis Lopes, but here we find him on his frist solo album.

Parrinha's tone is warm, soulful, welcoming and sad. The melancholy of his tone is well described in a poem he wrote, which I let 'deepl' translate into English, which is possibly not the most accurate tool to translate poetry, but I'm sure it somehow captures the spirit. "The erosion of me" is a painful image, and that melancholy sense of things moving away from you captures the sound wel.

The sound is direct, as if you were standing next to him, listening in to his private expressions of sadness. On some tracks, such as "Condição Eólica", he takes a more adventurous tone, expressing the sound of wind. The last track is an incredible feat of circular breathing, that not only shows his skills at the instrument, but also encapsulates the essence of the album through its kaleidoscopic yet coherent variation.

Music straight from the heart." Stef Gijssels, www.freejazzblog.org
